Mens Office Style for Every Shape

Not all men are fortunate enough to possess the chiseled torso and inverted v-shape so favored by the fashion industry, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a bit of style in every outfit you wear. The regular working class Joe can also look dashing, if he would only dress for the body he has instead of the one he’s told to want. Working with Bulk Whether you were on the college football team or learned to stress-eat on the job, a lot of guys have to deal with a lot of extra weight and bulk. Packing the pounds and inches does not, however, preclude you from taking a little style and making it your own. If both your width and height are intimidating, you should dispel other’s perception of you as a brick wall in a suit and necktie. Cuffed pants with minimal break take care of your vertical proportions; Double vents keep your waist trim, while a shallow pleat on your pants prevents unsightly pinching and snugness, which all too often happens to guys who are on the wider side of the spectrum. Men who have an issue with too much width and not enough height should consider a one-button suit jacket to leave more of the shirt and necktie visible. It makes your torso appear much longer and leaner, making for more aesthetically pleasing proportions. Busy patterns are a non-negotiable faux pas for wide men, short or tall. Big, gaudy prints only draw attention to your size and excesses thereof. Keep it subtle and – when possible – vertical. Styles like stripes reinforce the vertical axis of your body, balancing out all the horizontal action that’s going on. Chalk stripes and pin stripes have long been favorite style options for the horizontally challenged man. No matter what you wear, keep your pieces in proportion. Since you’re wide, you’ll want to look for wide-sized jackets and regular to wide width neckties. Your dimensions will be less of a detriment when your outfit jives with your body. Savvy Slim Style Dressing on the other, skinnier side of the spectrum can be just as challenging. A large amount of the men’s fashion being sold today was meant for tall, gym-buff Europeans; slim and slight guys are rarely a target market. Once you have your own style, though, you won’t need all those ill-fitting things that the others are hawking. Slim guys with a lot of height should try a three-button suit or, more recently, a double-breasted style. Both reduce the amount of vertical dimension that’s visible, while the latter also adds some volume horizontally to balance out your silhouette. Peak lapels also contribute to making that horizontal impression, and are therefore a good thing to have in your wardrobe. A two-button suit with a better view of your shirt and necktie are more strategic when you’re trying to exaggerate your height. The trick works for the same reasons as it did before; by leaving more torso visible, you create the illusion that you have a lot of it. Proportion should once again be a primary concern, just like with much of men’s style. If you’re already aware of how thin or even skinny you are, let that be the driving force for your wardrobe. Invest in sleek shoes, slim neckties and understated watches. They’re as lean and mean as you are, making for a much more cohesive combination of pieces.
